Creative arts

Creative arts is mandatory for students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts where they learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform.

Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.

Students must study 100 hours of both music and visual arts during Years 7 to 10. They also have an opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills in other art forms through elective subjects including drama, dance, photography and visual design. Students can then select from a range of courses in Years 11 to 12.

Visual arts

Students produce one main work each semester in a variety of different topics. Students also study how other artists have worked with the materials and techniques of art and this knowledge helps students to improve their own creative work.

Students have the opportunity to extend basic skills with a more intensive study of:

  • painting
  • drawing
  • sculpture
  • printmaking
  • ceramics
  • fibre
  • photography
  • film/animation
  • video

Music

Music at Miller Technology High School aims to give students the widest possible experience in playing, singing, listening to and creating music. The emphasis is on the development of practical skills and the fostering of an enjoyment of music.

Students have the opportunity to:

  • learn to play instruments such as electric keyboard, lead guitar, bass guitar and drum kit
  • develop their singing voices and sing for enjoyment
  • listen to and perform a wide range of music (including contemporary music to music from the various cultures represented in each group)
  • use computer programs to learn to read music, to write songs and to learn some of the techniques currently used in professional recording studios.
