Science and technology is mandatory for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Science is mandatory for students up to Year 10.
In science and technology, students explore the natural and made worlds. They learn how to apply scientific and technological skills, knowledge and understanding across a broad range of contexts.
Science 7-10 provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real-world problems. Science emphasises the skills for working scientifically, as well as critical and creative thinking to address scientific issues.
In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from different science disciplines, including:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Earth and Environmental Science
- Investigating Science
- Physics.
In Year 12, students who are studying at least one other science subject may also choose to study Science Extension.
At Miller IEC, Science is taught to advanced junior and senior classes. The purpose of studying science in the IEC is to provide students with an easier transition to high school and to expose students to a number of different subjects.
The focus is to develop appropriate language skills as well as the skills those students will need to study Science in the high school. Student performances and progress are monitored and evaluated throughout the term.
The content studied covers the areas of biology, chemistry and physics. Some of the topics studied in science are:
- dynamic earth
- rainforests
- the solar system
- the human body
- diseases
Social science
Social science is one of the most interesting and valuable subjects in the IEC. Studying this subject enables students to explore different cultures, countries, traditions and lifestyles. In addition to this, they can study the physical and geographical aspect of different countries.
Social science also gives students the opportunity to interact with each other. Since there are many activities that involve group work, students can also share ideas and discuss different topics. Students are able to see and understand things from different perspectives.
At Miller IEC, Social Science gives students the opportunity to express themselves.
